Symptom: No Cooling, Indoor Fan Runs, Compressor Does not start Caused By:High Pressure Safety Control Tripped-Reset required

Encapuslated High Pressure Contrl

Not all AC units have high pressure protection. Most smaller residential units do not. This device protects the compressor if the condenser fan motor quits or the coil becomes plugged. The reset buttom is external on some units. Look for a small red button protruding from the side of the condensing unit casing. It may be located behind the compressor access panel. It is not normally locate in the eletrical control area, but some are. Make sure the power is off before removing any panel. Look for a control simaler to the pictures shown. If there is a high pressure control it pressure sensing line will be located on the discharge line off the compressor or on the liquid line from the condenser. The reset button can be mounted directly on the line, or it may be connected via a capillary tube into the control panel. This is reset switch will hold the compressor off until it is reset. After it is reset the compressor may or may no start right away, but you should feel or hear a click when it is reset.
After the compressor does start, locate the cause of the high pressure or it will just tripped of again. Repeated high pressure failure will burn out the compressor. Check the condenser coil, make sure it is clean, the condenser coil should be clean regularly. Check the condenser fan motor. If the motor is load or noisy then the bearings maybe worn out, the can cuase the condenser fan to shut down on an internal over load and then cause the high pressure control to trip off. Check fan blade or mountings, are they tight and the blade can rotate freely? Sometimes a high pressure failure happens when the system is overcharge with refrigerant. It will run OK warm days and trip off on really hot days when you need it the most.

Do not attemp to remove the high pressure control, this may cause the release of the refrigerant gas.
